The Watersdown Affair...

(January 1, 2009)

The backstory:

To Guests at Watersdown Mansion

By separate invitation, you have been invited to Watersdown Mansion as the weekend guest of Sir Roger Watersdown. As Sir Roger’s guest, I thought you might be interested in some information about the mansion and, perhaps, about the other guests that will be present during your stay. I have enclosed a brief biography of each guest.

Watersdown Mansion is an old, elegant stone building situated in Yorkshire, England, and constructed in 1817. The original owner, Lord Balmy Farfrummit, made his fortune selling English pig iron to the French after Bonaparte’s defeate in 1815. Roger Watersdwon acquired the entire Farfrummit holdings in 1925 after the tragic death of Viscount Farfrummit aboard his sailing yacht, Frummit’s Ferry, which foundered during a fierce storm off Falmouth Harbor.

Sir Roger, as you may know, is the principle shareholder of the giant conglomerate Watersdown Beverages Ltd., and known far and wide as a jovial host. Female guests are cautioned that Sir Roger, after consumption of his customary evening cocktails, tends to become something of a lech.

I welcome you on behalf of Sir Roger and the entire Watersdown Mansion household, and I hope your stay will be a pleasant one.

Breakfast (Saturday and Sunday) Noon in the medium dining room.

Afternoon Snacks: 2:30 – 6:30 p.m. in the upstairs sitting room

Cocktails before dinner (Friday and Saturday): 7:00 p.m. in the drawing room.

Dinner (Friday and Saturday) After cocktails in the grand salon.

Sincerely,

Ms E. R. Aminmund

Confidential Secretary to Sir Roger Watersdown

The crime:

As soon as we arrived for dinner and started mingling with the guests an inspector from the Scotland Yard burst into the parlor and announced that Sir Roger Watersdown, our host for the evening, had been found dead in the mansion pool. A series of clues were given to us and it was up to us to find out who murdered our host.

We proceeded with dinner...but under the smiles and laughter I could feel everyone was uneasy knowing they were dining with a murderer.....

Throughout dinner and the rest of the evening we made conversation and asked numerous questions of each other trying to find motive, holes in others stories, etc.

Motives started coming out, some voluntarily, others not.

A few hours, dinner and a coffee later (just before midnight), we all made our accusations.

I thought it was Rog, the illegitimate son of Sir Roger. Rog thought it was Donny, the banker and Sir Roger's nephew. Donny thought it was Mal, Sir Roger's physician. Mal thought it was E.R.A., Sir Roger's secretary. E.R.A. thought it was a group effort consisting of the physician, Aly the writer and Pro the lawyer. Fingers were pointing at almost everyone at the table......except me! The American actress!

A few minutes before midnight it was time for the big reveal.....

the person who killed Sir Roger Watersdown of Yorkshire was none other than........
